Job Description

OVERVIEW : At Love146, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is far more than a financial overseer; they are a dynamic strategist, builder, and leader who will ensure the organization's financial health is aligned with its transformative mission. This role calls for a hands-on financial expert and a visionary thinker capable of navigating complex nonprofit funding landscapes while designing scalable systems to support organizational growth and sustainability.

As a key partner to the CEO, Executive Leadership Team, and the Finance Director, the CFO will balance strategic oversight with the ability to manage the day-to-day intricacies of financial operations. They will shape and enhance Love146’s financial infrastructure to expand the organization’s reach and impact, ensuring resources are deployed effectively to serve children impacted by trafficking and exploitation.

COMPENSATION : $125,000 - $140,000

LOCATION: Remote in the following states: NY, TN, NY, MA, CO, WI, CT, TX, NC; Hybrid (2 days/week in office) if location is within driving distance of New Haven, CT, Houston, TX, or Charlotte, NC Love146 offices

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Financial Leadership

  • Serve as a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, collaborating with the CEO and leadership to define and execute the organization’s long-term strategy.
  • Partner with the Finance Director to ensure seamless alignment between strategic vision and day-to-day financial operations, fostering a high-performing and collaborative finance team.
  • Drive financial scenario planning, risk assessment, and decision-making to position Love146 for sustainable growth and impact.
  • Represent Love146’s financial strategy and performance to the Board of Directors providing clear, actionable insights to support governance and accountability.
  • Lead organizational change initiatives, ensuring financial systems and staffing are equipped to support expansion, new programs, and operational complexity.

Financial Infrastructure and Operational Excellence

  • Design and implement robust financial systems, processes, and controls to meet the evolving needs of the organization while ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and funding and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide ultimate oversight of all financial operations, including accounting, payroll, reconciliations, budgeting, reporting, forecasting, and cash management.
  • Develop and maintain a scalable and technologically sophisticated financial infrastructure that supports multi-program operations, government and private grants, and donor-restricted funds.
  • Lead the preparation of accurate and timely budgets, financial reports, and analysis to inform resource allocation, program strategy, and investment decisions.
  • Lead the initiatives to design grant and program budgets, ensuring compliance with funder requirements and alignment with Love146’s mission.
  • Partner with the program teams to regularly review and monitor grant funding and make requests for modifications as needed and in a timely manner.

Team and Organizational Development

  • Mentor and develop the Finance Director and finance team, promoting a culture of excellence, innovation, and professional growth.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align financial strategies with programmatic and operational goals, ensuring resources are deployed effectively and equitably.
  • Foster a culture of transparency, accountability, and efficiency across the organization’s financial operations.

Growth and Sustainability

  • Actively engage and partner with the development team as they identify opportunities to expand funding sources, modeling and designing a funding structure that aligns financial strategies with fundraising goals.
  • Conduct financial modeling for strategic projects and initiatives to support data-driven decision-making.
  • Develop and model financial structures for grants, ensuring alignment with programmatic, operational and development needs, and providing strategic insights to optimize funding allocations.
  • Inform funding strategies by analyzing grant cycles and working with the Grants Director to proactively identify opportunities to replace or renew funding streams nearing expiration or up for renewal.
  • Monitor and manage the organization’s financial health, identifying areas for improvement and implementing solutions to enhance efficiency and sustainability.
  • Develop contingency plans to mitigate risks and ensure financial resilience in adverse scenarios.
  • Advise leadership on financial risks and opportunities to enhance strategic decision-making.
  • Oversee investment strategies, ensuring optimal use of organizational resources while maintaining liquidity to support Love146’s mission-critical activities.
  • Provide financial guidance for expansion initiatives, ensuring that infrastructure and resources are aligned with growth opportunities and organizational priorities.

Compliance and Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory, audit, and reporting requirements, including oversight of annual audits and the submission of the IRS  return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax, grant audits, tax filings, and 501(c)(3) status maintenance.
  • Monitor changes in legal and regulatory environments, proactively adapting systems and processes to maintain compliance and mitigate risks.
  • Monitor compliance with grant requirements within internal finance processes and enforce compliance with grant requirements across the organization.
  • Maintain robust internal controls to safeguard Love146’s assets and ensure the integrity of financial data.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

The CFO will be a seasoned and mature leader with at least 10-12 years of broad nonprofit finance experience. They will ideally have experience managing finance (accounting, budgeting, control, and reporting) for a complex nonprofit with multiple funding sources including government (federal and state) contracts and an affiliate structure with diverse program areas delivered nationally.

Educational Background :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field is required.
  • CPA or MBA strongly preferred, showcasing advanced expertise in financial strategy and management.

Professional Experience :

  • Minimum of 10 years of increasing responsibility in financial leadership, including at least 5 years in a senior financial management role within the nonprofit sector.
  • Proven ability to manage complex financial operations with multiple funding streams, including government contracts, private grants, and donor-restricted funds, supporting a multi-program organization
  • Proven experience designing and implementing financial systems and structures to support organizational growth and operational complexity.

Technical Expertise :

  • Advanced knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP) and compliance with federal regulations, including OMB Circular A-133 audit requirements.
  • Proficiency in Sage Intacct accounting software is strongly preferred and familiarity with CRM platforms (e.g., Salesforce).
  • Ability to understand, design, troubleshoot, and approve journal entries.
  • Strong analytical and forecasting skills, with a track record of developing financial models that drive informed decision-making.
