Job Description

Johns Hopkins University has developed an ambitious vision to continue to integrate life design, experiential learning, and mentoring in the academic and co-curricular learning experience for all students and postdoctoral fellows. At the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH), the Career Services Office?s mission is to help students make a powerful impact on public health by connecting to opportunities beyond the classroom through enhancing career/professional development engagement, coordinating experiential learning experiences, engaging with public health employers and alumni.


Reporting to the Executive Director, we are seeking a Career & Life Design Coach (MPH Students)who will provide comprehensive career education, professional development, and life design principles to BSPH graduate students. The Career & Life Design Coach (MPH Students) will develop scalable programs and interventions that engage students in life design, experiential learning, alumni and employer connections, and skill development.


The Career Services Office has modernized our approach to be 100% virtual. We expect that our work can be done from anywhere to scale our impact and make services more accessible across the institution. For this model to work, the ideal candidate must be comfortable with co-working and flexible work arrangements and can

present excellent relationship development skills and engage audiences virtually.  Must also be comfortable leading programs and interventions with groups and enjoys developing relationships and connections with multiple stakeholders. This position will use social media and digital outlets to engage various audiences and increase impact and accessibility. 


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serve as the subject matter expert and primary career coach to MPH students on strategies for creating their career and life design paths in public health.
  • Coach and consult MPH students (in person, virtual, or both) via weekly drop-in hours, group sessions, and one-on-one sessions to prepare targeted job searches in public health fields.
  • Designs, imprints, and teaches in-person and virtual seminars to MPH students to increase the confidence of graduating students preparing for employment.
  • Create content and digital resources for MPH students on career exploration and life design, branding, networking, interviewing, and job and internship search strategies.
  • Collaborate with program directors, faculty, and administrators to develop and increase career and experiential learning opportunities for MPH students.
  • Engage internal partners within the Johns Hopkins community (i.e., the Office of Integrative Learning and Life Design (ILLD), Hopkins Connect, and Hire Hopkins) to share resources and best practices.
  • Represents the Career Services Office and the Bloomberg School in speaking to prospective and newly admitted students during Student Visitor Days, Open Houses, Student Orientations, and other associated recruitment events.

Degree of Independent Action Performed

  • The position generally works independently; decision-making is made with the Executive Director and manages outside relationships. Manages online and operates recruiting management system (Handshake).


Internal and External contacts required as part of the job

  • Internal - Extensive internal contacts with the Executive Director, Associate Director, Assistant Director, and Alumni Career Fellow. University-wide at the Associate Dean and Director level. Regular contact with faculty and staff about assessing students' needs. Program coordinators about career services programming with academic units and other Bloomberg administrative offices and with Johns Hopkins student services offices whenever appropriate.
  • External - Daily contact with students and alumni, either in a coaching role (1:1 or small group), teaching career courses and workshops, or developing programming

  • Understanding of nationally recognized practices, employment trends, and procedures for university career and life design, especially the unique needs of students and alumni.
  • Ability to translate student experiences to employment as evidenced by prior experience in government, non-profit, education, or private sector settings.
  • Ability to demonstrate capacity to work effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds to promote an inclusive campus and community culture.
  • Demonstrate practical negotiation skills, building consensus, and influencing institutional decisions.
  • Be influential and manage change in a highly decentralized institution.
  • Analyze information and situations and make independent judgments and decisions.
  • Listen and communicate convincingly in written and verbal formats.
  • Effectively and creatively utilize social media to increase engagement and influence public opinion.
  • Manage and delegate workload and workflow under the pressure of deadlines.
  • Set priorities in a complex environment and represent the institution?s perspective to external entities.
  • Must have excellent computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) and be able to learn other programs as needed quickly.
  • Must also be comfortable presenting professionally to small and large groups using technologies such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, WebEx, PowerPoint, etc.





Minimum Qualifications

  • Master?s Degree required.
  • Three years of related experience in career services, counseling, outplacement, recruiting, HR, or higher education environment.




Preferred Qualifications

  • Master?s Degree in Public Health.
  • Three to five years of experience within higher education, government, non-profit, or corporate settings focused on public health.
  • The successful candidate will know the public health workforce and be familiar with education-to-job transitions for graduate students.
  • Strong multicultural competency; experience and working knowledge in diversity, equity, and inclusion to address the unique needs of the international student population
  • Experience in building partnerships within the BSPH community, the broader JHU community, and the field of public health.
